It depends on the definition of the ‘hackathon event’, the objectives and success criteria. For instance, a well-defined, internal hackathon could generate bold ideas, empower collaboration, team spirit and the experimentation mentality within the corporation. Winners could be awarded with resources (ideally x man months of particular expertise) to build the ‘real thing’ the right way — based on the winning idea/ ‘hacked’ prototype. In some other cases it is-as you say- just a networking event; it depends on the definition, purpose and sponsorship.
